What does it mean?

The Cox regression model provides us with estimates of the effect that different factors have on the time until the end event.

As well as considering the significance of the effect of different factors (e.g. how much shorter male life expectancy is compared to that of women), the model can give us an estimate of life expectancy for an individual (for example, a 60 year old woman with ischaemic heart disease, or a 40 year old man who smokes).

The HR is the ratio of the chance (the “hazard”) of an event in one group of observations divided by the chance (hazard) of the event in another group. A hazard ratio of 1 means the risk is 1 × that of the second group, i.e. the same. An HR of 2 implies twice the risk.
